Two snowboarders who ventured out of bounds from the Mt. Waterman Ski Area were rescued Saturday afternoon after enduring a night of subfreezing temperatures and driving winds, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said.

Ryan Law, 18, of Whittier, and Shea Hubbin, 18, of La Habra, were found uninjured and in “excellent condition” three miles from the resort northeast of La Canada Flintridge, said Sgt. Vince Callier.

They survived the evening by building a shelter of branches, Callier said. The teenagers were airlifted to the ski resort, where they were reunited with their families.

They were reported missing by their parents Friday evening when they did not return from a daylong trip to the mountains.

“The weather conditions [overnight] were extreme,” said sheriff’s Deputy Steve Sciacca. “There were 30-35 mile per hour winds, 31-degree temperatures and zero visibility.”

The National Ski Patrol and the sheriff’s Antelope Valley search and rescue team found the teens about 1 p.m.
