It’s Time to Turn Off Murdoch Altogether

Share

It was sad to see in today’s TV/Radio column (May 1), that Century Communications has caved in and will now be carrying Fox Sports West 2. Another stand that can’t withstand Rupert Murdoch’s insatiable thirst to own everything he touches, and then to change the playing field.

As represented in the press, Fox bought the TV rights to local sports teams for a single outlet, Fox Sports West, which suddenly was split in two: great for Murdoch, but is it so good for us?

Los Angeles sports fans beware. History shows that when Murdoch decides to get involved, he has no interest in tradition--see how his involvement in British sports has removed international rugger and top-class soccer from the reach of anyone who doesn’t own Murdoch’s satellite TV service; and papal knighthood notwithstanding, his ownership of a broad range of newspapers has had an alarming influence on lowering the tone of public debate.

I can look forward only with sadness at what his ownership of the Dodgers, and apparent imminent involvement in every other pro sport in this town, will result in for the fans. One thing is certain: It will make more money for him, and cost you more.
