Matthews on a Hot Streak but Forced to Cool His Heels

Gary Matthews (Granada Hills High, Mission College) is batting .395 for double-A Mobile, Ala.

Matthews, however, has missed five games with a strained ligament in his right wrist and won’t return for about a week. A similar injury to his left wrist sidelined Matthews for a month last season. He has 30 hits, 25 runs batted in and eight extra-base hits among 76 at-bats.

Triple-A--Bryan Corey (Thousand Oaks High, Pierce College) pitched three shutout innings, striking out three and allowing two hits against New Orleans and is 3-0 with a 1.69 earned-run average for Tucson of the Pacific Coast League. . . . Roland De La Maza (St. Genevieve High) pitched eight innings for Omaha in a 3-2 victory over Albuquerque and is 2-2. John Snyder (Westlake High) is 1-2 for Calgary after allowing seven runs and eight hits in 7 1/3 innings in a loss to Nashville.

Double-A--David Newhan (Pepperdine) snapped out of a slump, hitting two home runs for Mobile, Ala. . . . Dan Cey (El Camino Real High) had two hits for New Britain of the Eastern League and is batting .250.
