Ban on Leaf Blowers to Be Considered

Share

Gardeners and landscapers in Huntington Beach soon may have to find another way of clearing leaves and mowed grass if a ban on gas-powered leaf blowers becomes the law.

Councilman Dave Sullivan said he will ask the city attorney to prepare an ordinance banning the gas-powered blowers. The ordinance is expected to be modeled after a recent Los Angeles ordinance.

“I realize the ban will make the work more labor-intensive, but it’s a health problem,” Sullivan said. “Thousands of residents who suffer from allergies have their conditions worsened by the gas fumes and the blowing of pollen and dust into the air they breath.”

Sullivan, who suffers from asthma, said the blowers also generate “obnoxious” amounts of noise and pose an environmental hazard.

The matter will be discussed at tonight’s City Council meeting, which starts at 7 in council chambers, 2000 Main St. Information: (714) 536-5227.
