A big hit: Does Joey Cuppari of Westlake regret his decision to accept a football scholarship to Colorado State? The school doesn’t have a baseball team, and Cuppari, a senior outfielder, sure looks good with a bat and glove.

Last week, Cuppari went nine for 14 with seven runs scored and five stolen bases. Westlake Coach Chuck Berrington said he thinks Cuppari has a chance to be taken in baseball’s June amateur draft.

Defensive stars: When it comes to fielding, Crescenta Valley has two of the region’s best in sophomore second baseman Mark McCauley and junior catcher Luke Peterson. McCauley has made one error in 74 chances and Peterson has one error in 180 chances.

No fear: Jon Bringuier of Granada Hills probably wouldn’t mind facing Kennedy pitcher Jack Cassel again when the teams meet next week.

Bringuier, who had two home runs in a 10-9 victory over the Golden Cougars last Tuesday, hit a grand slam off the Loyola Marymount-bound senior last year.

Smooth transition: Cindy Muran of Newbury Park picked up where teammate Oli Keohohou left off at the plate a week ago.

Muran, a junior shortstop who raised her batting average 75 points in five games, went 12 for 15 with six runs batted in and scored six runs. Muran, who is batting .514, is one of six Panthers batting over .350.

A week before, Keohohou went nine for 13 in four games.
