Cookson Turns Up Heat in Tucson
Outfielder Brent Cookson (Santa Paula) became the first Tucson player to clear the 40-foot fence in center field in Tucson Electric Park, the triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks. He did it in his first at-bat of the season in the first inning of the opener.
Cookson hasn’t stopped hammering the ball. He is batting .367, eighth in the Pacific Coast League, and has four home runs. In eight professional seasons, he made the major leagues only for a 22-game stint with the Kansas City Royals in 1995, batting .143.
Cookson was signed by the Diamondbacks in June and loaned to Laredo of the Mexican League, where he batted .301 with eight home runs in 28 games. Arizona re-signed him in December.
