Birk Pitches Two-Hitter, Edison Beats Barons Again

Edison, which hadn’t won a Sunset League softball game in six seasons before defeating Fountain Valley last month, beat the 10th-ranked Barons again, 1-0, Thursday at Edison.

Kelly Birk pitched a two-hitter and struck out five for the Chargers (10-10, 3-4). Birk also scored the only run on a two-out single by Harmony Gates in the third inning.

Fountain Valley is 14-12, 4-3.

In Century League baseball:

No. 4 Canyon 11, Foothill 1 (5 innings, mercy)--Chad Heisterman was two for two with three RBIs and two runs scored and Ryan Smith was two for four with two RBIs for Canyon. Todd Rigby (6-1) pitched a three-hitter for visiting Canyon (19-4, 11-1). Foothill is 17-5, 10-2.

In Olympic League baseball:

Calvary Chapel 13, Brethren Christian 3 (6 innings, mercy)--Mike Molina had two hits and an RBI as Calvary Chapel (16-5, 11-1) clinched a share of the league title.

In the Sea View League boys’ diving:

Vincent wins--El Toro’s Ray Vincent earned 512.75 points in the one-meter springboard to win the championship. Santa Margarita’s Owen Lyle was second with 321.5 points.

In Sea View League girls’ diving:

Marquis wins--Santa Margarita’s Kristen Marquis took first in the one-meter springboard with 498.45 points. El Toro’s Jennifer McNally was second with 413.75 points.

In the South Coast League girls’ diving championships:

Brown gets title--Dana Hills’ Michelle Brown took first in the one-meter springboard with 508.8 points. Capistrano Valley’s Tiffany Manning was second with 456.75.

In the Century League golf finals:

Seymour wins--Foothill’s Nick Seymour had a two-day total of 11-over 151 (76-75) to win the league title at Strawberry Farms (par 71). Villa Park’s Mark Hewlett and Zack Cohn finished second and third, respectively.

In the Garden Grove League: Ritchie wins--Freshman Justin Ritchie of Pacifica won the individual league title with a three-over 147 and senior teammate Jeremy Salles took second with 155.

In the Golden West League:

Three Servite golfers advance--Servite’s Will Luciano shot a one-under-par 70 on the Riverside Course at Green River, for a two-day total of 143 to win the league championship.

In the Orange League finals:

Oh wins title--Brea Olinda’s Alex Oh shot a one-over 216 to win the league title.

In the South Coast League:

Brandmeier wins--Gary Brandmeier of Dana Hills shot a four-over 148 to win the league title.

In Garden Grove League softball:

No. 2 Pacifica 1, Garden Grove 0 (8 innings)--Amanda Freed struck out 15 in her county-leading seventh no-hitter of the season. Freed’s one-out double in the eighth drove in the game-winning run for Pacifica (22-3, 10-0).

In the Golden West League:

Ocean View 4, Tustin 3 (11 innings)--Leah Gulla of Ocean View (16-9, 6-2) broke her ankle trying to avoid a tag at second base in the fourth inning and underwent surgery.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Hills 9, Laguna Beach 0--Leea Harlan struck out 10 in a perfect game for Laguna Hills (15-7, 7-0). She also tripled.

In Golden West League boys’ tennis finals:

All-Servite final in singles--Servite’s Ryan Moore defeated Santa Ana’s Hector Martinez, 6-2, 6-0, in the semifinals at Santa Ana. Moore will face teammate Brock Heimann in the final at 2 today. Heimann defeated teammate Rafael Sweet, 6-0, 6-1.

In Pacific Coast League boys’ tennis finals:

Talarico wins--For the second consecutive year, Laguna Beach’s Aaron Talarico won the title by defeating University’s Greg Biorkman in the final, 6-1, 6-4.

In Golden West League volleyball:

Servite 3, Ocean View 2--Eric Barnes had 20 kills as Servite rallied to win its first league title, 8-15, 3-15, 15-4, 15-5, 15-7.

In the Sunset League:

No. 5 Marina 3, Edison 0--Edison lost, 15-9, 15-12, 15-8, and is tied for third with Esperanza, Huntington Beach and Los Alamitos. The teams will take part in a tournament starting at 3 today at Marina.
