Hernandez Hurls Sylmar Past Poly, 8-2

Ivan Hernandez of Sylmar High threw a five-hitter, struck out 12 and walked one to help the Spartans to an 8-2 victory over visiting Poly in an East Valley League game Monday.

Hernandez also had a hit and drove in a run.

Carl Ball, Ricardo Zamora and Jesus Martel each had two hits for the Spartans (18-5, 12-2 in conference play). Ball scored twice, Zamora drove in two runs and Martel drove in one.

George Felix had two hits for Poly (13-6-2, 8-4-2).

North Hollywood 7, Grant 1--Sophomore right-hander Brandon Murphy (4-1) struck out five in two innings of relief to earn the East Valley League victory at Grant. Raul Casteneda had two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs for North Hollywood (16-11-1, 11-2-1).

Monroe 14, Reseda 2--Victor Hall was four for four with three runs batted in and scored three runs for Monroe in the Mid-Valley League game at Reseda.

Hall, who posted the fastest qualifying times in the 100 and 200 meters in the Valley Pac-8 Conference track and field preliminaries last week, had a single and a three-run double in the first for the Vikings (14-13-1, 8-7).

John Ennis (6-3) threw a three-hitter, struck out seven and walked three for Monroe.

Van Nuys 6, Canoga Park 1--Juan Romo had a three-run double and Angel Barajas had a two-run double for Van Nuys (12-12-1, 7-7-1) at Lanark Park. The Wolves remain one-half game behind first-place Monroe in the Mid-Valley League.

Crespi 16, Harvard-Westlake 5--The Celts hit four home runs, including three two-run blasts in a six-run third inning of a Mission League game at Franklin Field.

Anthony Trejo, Luke Worgan and Tim Mathews all hit two-run home runs in the third to stake first-place Crespi (20-5-1, 10-1) to a 14-4 lead. Mike Jackson (7-1) threw a five-hitter and struck out six.

Oak Park 8, St. Bonaventure 7--Christian Chivaroli hit a three-run home run in the fourth to give Oak Park a 7-6 lead in the Tri-Valley League game.

Rick Spelman was three for three, scored a run and drove in another for Oak Park (12-8, 7-3).

Calabasas 8, Nordhoff 1--Mark Wilson had three hits, including a second-inning grand slam, for the Coyotes (11-11, 9-4) in a Frontier League game.
