* Division III preliminaries at Long Beach Veterans Stadium, 4 p.m. Friday: Athletes from the Freeway, Garden Grove, Orange and Pacific Coast leagues will attempt to qualify for the division finals May 23 at Cerritos College. The Brea Olinda boys’ and girls’ teams should be near the top in this meet. Athletes to watch include University’s Allyson Marquand in the distance events and Laguna Hills’ Ashley Furst and Brea Olinda’s Maika Nelson in the 800.

* Division I preliminaries at Long Beach Veterans Stadium, noon Saturday: Athletes from the Sunset League are the only county representatives in this meet, but they should make some noise in the throwing events and pole vault. Katie Rorem of Marina set a county record in the pole vault this season (12-1).

* Division II preliminaries at Trabuco Hills High, noon Saturday: The Century, Empire, Golden West, Sea View and South Coast leagues have seven of the county’s top 10 boys’ teams and six of its top 10 girls’ teams. Tustin won the boys’ team title in 1997 and might challenge Mission Viejo again this season. The Mission Viejo and Santa Margarita girls’ teams are expected to qualify several athletes for next weekend’s division finals.
