El Toro’s Five-Run Seventh Beats Eagles

El Toro rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh ininng to defeat fourth-ranked Santa Margarita, 9-8, in a Sea View League baseball game Thursday at Santa Margarita.

Joe Jardine’s two-run double tied the score, 7-7, and Blair Lucas followed with a two-run single to right for the third-place Chargers (17-8, 9-5).

Santa Margarita (19-6, 7-3) had taken a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the sixth when Mike O’Gorman hit a grand slam.

In the Century League:

No. 3 Canyon 5, El Modena 0--Canyon (21-4, 13-1) clinched sole possession of the league title. Reliever Aaron Bryan struck out five in 4 1/3 innings.

No. 8 Foothill 2, Santa Ana Valley 0--Seth Davenport had three doubles, including an RBI double in the second inning that gave Foothill a 1-0 lead, and Ray Hinojosa (6-1) struck out seven for the second-place Knights (18-6, 11-3).

Villa Park 7, Orange 0--Brian Kunisch struck out three in a complete game for Villa Park (11-13, 6-8). Villa Park’s Sean Swan doubled for his seventh consecutive hit in the last three games. Matt Swearingen hit a three-run homer in the first inning. The teams play for third place today at Villa Park.

In the Empire League:

Loara 10, Cypress 6--Jason Pushckor, Jason Rodriguez and Matt Gay hit back-to-back-to-back home runs and Dante Reid hit a two-run shot, all in the first inning for Cypress (15-10, 8-6). Brian Brennan hit a fifth-inning grand slam for Loara (13-11, 8-6).

In the Freeway League:

Fullerton 8, Sunny Hills 0--Fullerton (16-7, 10-4) clinched second place in league. Juan Monzon had four RBIs and Luke Smude doubled twice, for Fullerton.

No. 9 La Habra 8, Troy 1--The Highlanders clinched their first league championship since 1988. Bubba Cauley (9-2) pitched his ninth complete game, Dave Cosato had three doubles and two RBIs and Al Estarda had a two-run homer for La Habra (18-6, 12-2).

In the Garden Grove League:

La Quinta 16, Santiago 0 (5, mercy)--Top-ranked La Quinta clinched its sixth consecutive league championship, getting 17 hits. Gerald Laird had three hits (giving him 200 in his career), including his sixth homer, and drove in three runs.

Pacifica 5, Bolsa Grande 0--Matt Huggett (8-2) struck out 12 and walked two in a two-hitter for Pacifica (9-2, 17-8). The Mariners clinched second place.

In the Golden West League:

No. 5 Servite 4, Ocean View 0--Brian Wolfe (10-1) struck out 15 and didn’t walk a batter in a two-hitter for Servite (19-5-1, 13-1). Mike Montanio hit a two-run homer in the sixth with two outs. Ocean View is 15-10, 11-3.

Tustin 10, Westminster 7--Chad Chop was three for four with four RBIs for Tustin (17-7, 8-6). Richard Lane was four for four with a run batted in for Tustin.

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 10, Orange Lutheran 0--Junior second baseman Randy Blood hit a solo home run in the third inning and a two-run double off the wall in the fifth for Calvary Chapel (19-5, 13-1). Jon Smith had an RBI-single in the second inning and run-scoring double in the fourth.

In the Orange League:

Savanna 1, Brea Olinda 0--John Curry hit Mike Davern’s first pitch of the seventh inning over the fence to lift visiting Savanna (8-6 in league). Davern struck out 11 for Brea Olinda (16-8-1, 10-3-1). Savanna’s Rocky Fennel pitched a one-hitter.

Western 10, Anaheim 9--Western (17-7-1, 10-3-1) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to win and move into a tie for first with Brea Olinda.

Western’s Mike Colleto led off the seventh with a home run to pull within one. After the Pioneers loaded the bases, Aaron Bell was hit by a pitch to tie the score and Ben Swanson followed with a game-winning single to left.

In the Pacific Coast League:

Laguna Beach 14, Costa Mesa 7--Eathan Whitney had two hits and led off a seven-run seventh inning with a double for Laguna Beach (12-12, 7-8). Kyle Johnson hit his first career home run, drove in three runs and earned the win. Costa Mesa is 2-21, 1-14.

In the South Coast League:

Dana Hills 1, Trabuco Hills 0--Sean Fluent’s sacrifice fly in the second enabled Chris Rosecrans to score for Dana Hills (17-7, 10-4). Fluent (7-2) struck out 11 in a one-hitter. Todd Gelatka struck out 13 for Trabuco Hills.

No. 2 Mater Dei 10-8, San Clemente 0-2 (2nd game, 8)--Aaron Escobedo had two hits and two RBIs in Game 2 of the doubleheader and four hits on the afternoon for Mater Dei (21-4, 13-2). Jeff Gooman struck out 15 in seven-plus innings for San Clemente (6-18, 2-13) in Game 2.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 5, Marina 2--Dale Thayer struck out 10 in a four-hitter as host Edison (17-8, 8-6) clinched a playoff birth. Jeff Grady hit a home run for Edison. Marina is 8-17, 5-9.

No. 10 Esperanza 12, No. 6 Fountain Valley 10--Josh Shaffer’s three-run home run in the second inning helped the Aztecs (16-8-1, 10-3-1) clinch their second consecutive league title. Nick Pouci improved to 7-2.
