Harbor Village Aflutter With Holiday Spirit
Dawn’s early light isn’t needed to get an eyeful of red, white and blue at Ventura Harbor Village, where maintenance workers Wednesday raised 40 American flags in honor of Memorial Day weekend.
The tradition of dressing the waterfront promenade started seven years ago and includes a weekend ceremony complete with a color guard, harbor spokeswoman Cherryl Connally said.
“It’s a holiday that recognizes our country and putting the flags up now lets people know it’s coming,” Connally said.
The federal holiday is Monday.
A four-man color guard from Ventura VFW Post No. 1679 will also stand at attention as the “Star-Spangled Banner” is played at 12:45 p.m. Sunday at the harbor’s Carousel Stage, said Leo Gilmond, post chaplain and color guard captain.
The flags, each 3 feet long and 2 feet wide, are flown at the harbor on several national holidays, as well as during an annual March of Dimes fund-raiser and at powerboat races held every October, Connally said.
Between Friday and Tuesday, 26,000 people are expected to stroll by the display at 1559 Spinnaker Drive. There will be clown shows Saturday, live parrot shows Sunday and storytelling for children Monday. For information, call Ventura Harbor Village at 644-0169.
