A homeless man walking on crutches to a local shelter was critically injured in a car accident, authorities said.

The man, identified as 53-year-old Francis P. Carroll, was on his way Thursday night to Share Our Selves in Costa Mesa just after 10:30 p.m. when he crossed Superior Avenue north of Dana Road and was hit by a Toyota Camry, said Sgt. Al Fischer of the Newport Beach Police Department.

The driver of the car, 30-year-old Debra Boodman of Costa Mesa, told police she did not see Carroll in the road, Fischer said.

Carroll was thrown against the car’s windshield and then onto the ground when the driver braked, witnesses told police. He was transported to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where he was treated for a broken hip, a fractured pelvis and abrasions. Information on his condition was not available Friday.

Boodman, who had minor injuries, was treated and released Thursday night at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach.

Police said their investigation of the incident is continuing, though it appeared that neither alcohol nor drugs played any part in the accident. The driver was not cited.
