Rogers, Rio Mesa Slide In for 4-3 Victory Over Saugus

Rhianna Rogers scored with a head-first slide in the bottom of the ninth inning on Robyn Roberts’ single to give Rio Mesa a 4-3 victory over Saugus in the first round of the Division II Southern Section softball playoffs Friday at Rio Mesa.

Saugus second baseman Stephanie Blaire knocked Roberts’ single down, but her throw was late as Rogers scored from second base.

Rogers had three hits for Rio Mesa (22-5), and Kiara Cochran and Chrissy Hildebrandt each added two hits.

Monique Barretto (11-2) pitched four scoreless innings of relief for the victory.

Julie Watson, Sandy Volk, Jennifer McLarty and Blaire each had two hits for Saugus (17-10).

In other Division II first-round games:

Hart 3, West Torrance 0--Amanda Fortune (16-4) pitched a three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and one walk at Newhall Park.

Nicolette Weinstein and Jocelyn Evans had run-scoring singles for Hart (21-6).

Righetti 4, Valencia 0--Senior Jocelyn Forest, who will attend California in the fall, struck out 13 and limited Valencia to three hits at Righetti.

Kim Mutaw had a double, and Lauren Watson and Nicole Giampaolo had singles for Valencia (16-12).

Quartz Hill 8, Buena 0--Olaya Salazar drove in four runs with three hits, including a two-run double, and scored once for host Quartz Hill (20-3-2).

Jodie Cox (18-3) pitched a three-hitter with nine strikeouts for the Rebels, and Amber Slaton contributed a two-run home run.

Quartz Hill will face Hart on Tuesday.

DIVISION I

Camarillo 6, Glendale 0--Cindy Ball pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead host Camarillo (19-5).

Ball gave up a single to Julie Choi with two out in the third inning.

Allie Taverner had two hits and two runs batted in for Camarillo and Jessica Mendoza also had two hits.

Taverner capped a three-run third inning with a single to score Ball and also drove in Mendoza in the sixth with a single to produce the final score.

Thousand Oaks 6, Arroyo Grande 2--Colleen Spencer’s third-inning grand slam gave the Lancers a 4-0 lead at Thousand Oaks. Spencer also had a run-scoring single in the sixth inning.

Jennifer Richards drove in a run on a fielder’s choice.

Jenna Allen and Shelly Teverbaugh each had two hits for Thousand Oaks. Kim Martin (8-4) allowed one hit in five innings.

DIVISION III

Paso Robles 3, Moorpark 1--Cathy Kelly hit a two-run home run with one out in the 20th inning to give host Paso Robles (19-9) the victory.

Tiffany Goudy struck out 17 while pitching a five-hitter to earn the victory for the Bearcats (19-9).

Erin Heinbechner (16-6) allowed nine hits in a losing effort for Moorpark (18-6).

Calabasas 3, Atascadero 2--Sara Hall had a two-run double and scored the winning run on a fielding error for the Coyotes at Calabasas.

Amy Rosson (14-4) finished with a four-hitter with 11 strikeouts and three walks for Calabasas. She gave up two unearned runs in the third inning.

The Coyotes (18-5) overcame five errors and will play Redondo in the second round.

DIVISION IV

La Reina 8, Santa Paula 0--Mackenzie Vandergeest had a two-run home run and Monica Thompson had a two-run double in a six-run sixth inning at La Reina.

Vandergeest had three hits and Thompson had two. Stephanie Hyatt was two for four and scored a run.

Chaminade 18, Ramona Convent 0--Maureen LeCocq pitched her second no-hitter and first perfect game of the season, striking out 17 at Chaminade.

LeCocq (20-7) has gone 143 innings without allowing an earned run. LeCocq had a home run in the fourth inning for Chaminade (20-7-1).

Freshman Lindsey Weinsten had three hits and drove in three runs.

Harvard-Westlake 7, Fillmore 2--Sandra Aken’s seventh-inning grand slam capped a six-run rally for Harvard-Westlake (15-12) in a game at Fillmore (11-8).

Anna Russell (12-11) pitched a two-hitter with four strikeouts and four walks.

Genevieve Casalez had a run-scoring double and a single for Fillmore, and Lisa Feigenbaum had a run-scoring triple and a run-scoring single for Harvard-Westlake.

The Wolverines will next face La Reina.

Alemany 1, Lompoc 0--Sarita Contreras pitched a one-hitter and Annalisa Allen’s two-out single in the top of the sixth inning, scoring Sasha Hernandez, paced Alemany (18-10) at Lompoc.

Contreras (3-3) allowed a leadoff infield single to shortstop by Crystal Farley before shutting down Lompoc the rest of the way.

DIVISION V

Village Christian 7, Rosamond 0--Jaclyn Aranda (22-1) got her 15th shutout of the season by pitching a one-hitter with 18 strikeouts for host Village Christian (23-2).

Aranda had a no-hitter going for 4 2/3 innings before it came to an end on a bloop single by Yesenia Custanedo.

Jamie Gourson, Laura Robbins, Aimee Diaz and Aranda each had two hits for Village Christian.

Aranda made it 2-0 with a one-out single to score Robbins in the first inning and capped a three-run fifth inning with a two-out single to drive in catcher Ashlee DuBois.

St. Bonaventure 18, Villanova Prep 0--Annie Marostica had a three-run triple, a double and a run-scoring single for host St. Bonaventure (13-13) and combined with Debra Garvin on a five-inning perfect game that was called because of the 10-run rule.

Marostica (7-9) struck out seven in three innings, while Garvin had four strikeouts.

The Seraphs will play Crossroads on Tuesday.

Crossroads 2, Providence 1--Chrissy Koeth had two singles for Providence (17-4) at Crossroads.

Koeth gave Providence a 1-0 lead in the third inning when she stole second and third after a single and scored on a wild pitch.

Paraclete 6, Flintridge Prep 0--Amanda Wachsmuth (10-3) pitched a three-hitter and struck out six at Paraclete.

Lisa Ament had three hits and drove in two runs for Paraclete (19-5-2). Erin Flores had two hits and drove in two runs, and Jackie Kolesar had two hits and drove in a run.
