Long Beach State wasn’t ready to go home, and the 49ers made their point emphatically with a 19-9 victory over Loyola Marymount on Friday to stay alive in the NCAA West Regional at Palo Alto.

The 49ers’ Paul Day hit two home runs and drove in four runs.

Long Beach State will play top-seeded Stanford today in an elimination game.

Loyola Marymount, which beat Stanford in its first game, will play Alabama, a 13-10 loser to North Carolina State.

Long Beach State scored nine runs in the second inning, chasing Billy Traber (4-5), the first of eight Lion pitchers.

EAST--USC is one loss from elimination after losing to Virginia Commonwealth, 14-4, in a game in which Coach Mike Gillespie was ejected in the third inning.

The Trojans play Clemson today on its own field after the Tigers lost to South Alabama in 16 innings, 2-1, when Scott Clackum walked in the winning run.

USC starter Mike Penney gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings.

In another game, the Citadel eliminated Fordham, 5-1.

SOUTH II--Cal State Fullerton used a three-run homer by Aaron Rowand and four Tulane errors for a 10-6 victory in Baton Rouge, La.

The Titans (46-15) advanced to a meeting today with two-time defending national champion Louisiana State, which hit five home runs in eliminating Southwest Louisiana, 15-6.

Harvard beat Nicholls State, 6-5, in 10 innings.

MIDWEST--Wichita State struggled with the off-speed pitching of Arkansas starter Mike Moriarity and lost, 3-2, in 11 innings. Georgia Tech’s Stephen Donaghey hit two home runs as the Yellow Jackets eliminated Southeast Missouri State, 14-3, and Oklahoma State defeated Arizona State, 13-8.

ATLANTIC I--North Carolina beat top-ranked Miami, 6-5, in Coral Gables, Fla., when Jarrett Shearin singled home Brian Roberts in the ninth inning.

Florida International ousted Bowling Green, 13-7, and South Carolina beat Texas Tech, 9-8.

ATLANTIC II--Florida State’s Brian Cox went six for six in a 27-6 win that eliminated Delaware at Tallahassee, Fla.

Auburn stayed alive, beating Liberty, 3-2, and Oklahoma defeated Rutgers, 9-7.

SOUTH I--Illinois’ Cody Salter threw a complete game for a 13-2 victory over Monmouth t Gainesville, Fla. Baylor beat top-seeded Florida, 10-5, and Wake Forest defeated Richmond, 6-5.

CENTRAL--Washington hit four homers, including a grand slam by Nick Stefonick, to beat top-seeded Rice, 20-11, at College Station, Texas. Ten Washington batters were hit by pitches, an NCAA record. Oral Roberts beat North Carolina Charlotte, 20-13, and Texas A&M; beat Mississippi State, 4-3.
