Publisher of ‘For Dummies’ Series Files IPO

IDG Books Worldwide Inc., the publisher of “Windows for Dummies,” “Wine for Dummies,” and other “Dummies” instructional books, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission to raise as much as $50 million through the sale of common stock. Founded in 1990, the Foster City, Calif.-based company has become famous for explaining complex subjects, ranging from computer software to personal finance, in an easy-to-understand format. IDG produced more No. 1 bestselling computer books than any other publisher last year, according to Publishers Weekly. IDG’s parent company, International Data Group Inc., the Boston-based publisher of magazines such as PC World, Computerworld and Infoworld, will continue to hold a controlling stake after the stock sale.
