Chicago Bear defensive end Alonzo Spellman was being sought for questioning after authorities said he scuffled with security workers while intervening in a fight outside a Detroit.

Police said the 6-foot-4, 292-pound Spellman was trying to break up a fight between two women at the Renaissance Center’s Westin Hotel when he struggled with five security officers who responded.

Two international snowboarders arrested on marijuana charges pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge at Minden, Nev., and received sentences that require them to stay out of trouble for one year.

Michael Kildevaeld, 31, a member of Denmark’s Olympic snowboarding team, and Frederic Brett Tippie, who competes for Canada, were arrested Feb. 28 after a sheriff’s deputy stopped their car for traveling 83 mph in a 55 mph zone.

A drug-sniffing dog found about two grams of suspected marijuana and a pipe inside the vehicle.

UCLA’s Matt Breen, Jean-Noel Grinda and Vince Allegre won first-round matches in the NCAA men’s championships at Athens, Ga.

USC’s George Bastl upset Auburn’s Lee Pearson, and top-seeded Pavel Kudrnac of Oklahoma State escaped with a 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 victory over Texas Christian’s Esteban Carril.

Stanford’s Julie Scott defeated No. 1-seeded Mirela Vladulescu of Alabama Birmingham, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5, in the quarterfinals of the NCAA women’s championship at South Bend, Ind.

Two unseeded players will meet in the singles semifinals today for the first time when Ania Blesyznski of Stanford takes on Zuzana Lesenarova of San Diego.

Marissa Catlin of Georgia won the Honda Award as the top women’s college player. She is not competing in the NCAA event because of illness.

Lisa Leslie scored 20 points as the United States dominated inside and routed European champion Lithuania, 87-61, in Group B play at the Women’s World Championships at Karlsruhe, Germany.

The victory clinched a second-round berth for the U.S.

Natalie Williams and Kara Wolters had 14 points each and combined with Leslie for 23 rebounds as the Americans won their second in a row. Lithuania (1-1), was led by Jurgita Streimikyte, who had 18 points and 11 rebounds.

In the opening game, Mikiko Hagiwara’s 17 points helped Japan (2-0) hang on for a 73-66 victory over Senegal (0-2).

Driver Jim Guthrie, injured in a crash during the Indianapolis 500, was released from Methodist Hospital and flew back to his home in Albuquerque.

Guthrie, 36, was the only driver hurt in a seven-car crash on the 49th lap of Sunday’s race.

He underwent surgery for a broken right elbow and also broke his left leg, cracked ribs and received a small cut to his right leg.

Andrea Noe of Italy made a final breakaway with about half a mile left and captured the 11th stage of the Tour of Italy bicycle race at San Marino for his first career win.

Noe completed the 136 1/2-mile course from Macerata to the tiny mountain republic of San Marino in 5:12.20.

Alex Zuelle of Switzerland retained the overall leader’s pink jersey.

Kyle Voska of Miami of Ohio, Ryan Armour of Ohio State and J.J. Henry of Texas Christian shot five-under-par 67s to share the individual lead after the first round of the NCAA men’s golf championships at Albuquerque. Five players opened with 68s and 12 more were at 69.

Among those at 69 were Matt Kuchar of Georgia Tech, the low amateur in the Masters last month, Joel Kribel, the Stanford junior who also made the cut at Augusta, and defending champion Charles Warren of Clemson.

Four Oklahoma State players broke par to give the Cowboys a one-shot lead over Georgia in the team competition.

Pat Knight, son of Indiana Coach Bob Knight, was fired as coach of the Columbus Cagerz, who have a 4-7 record in their first season in the United States Basketball League.
