Helping Central American Flood Victims

The International Red Cross on Monday said that it would need about $7.4 million to help victims of massive flooding and mudslides across Central America.

Honduras and Nicaragua were particularly hard hit, with thousands of people feared dead and hundreds of thousands driven from their homes.

Flood relief--A phone number to call for donating items through the Nicaraguan consulate for flood relief was incorrect in Tuesday’s paper. The correct number is (213) 669-1028.

In Washington, President Clinton said the U.S. would provide $2 million in food, medicine, water and other emergency supplies.

Southern Californians can contribute through several sources, including:

* The American Red Cross, 2700 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles 90057, or credit card contributions can be made through (800) 435-7669; in Spanish, (800) 257-7575. Contributions can be earmarked specifically for Honduras or Nicaragua, or for the general International Response Fund. Donations can also be made at local Red Cross offices around the state.

* The Consulate of Nicaragua is accepting contributions at Cordoba Electronics, 5120 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles; (213) 669-1078. Donations of all kinds will be accepted, but organizers prefer canned goods.

* The Consulate of Honduras is accepting donations of medicine, clothing, canned food and money through ASOSAL, 660 S. Bonnie Brae St., Los Angeles; (213) 483-1244. Donations also may be made to the “Consulate of Honduras, Washington, D.C., Emergency Fund Hurricane Mitch,” through NationsBank account number 1933257521. Arrangements to contribute goods can be made through Gloria Granillo of TACA Airlines in Washington, D.C., at (202) 833-2076.

National and international relief organizations belonging to InterAction also are accepting donations. They include:
