Two New Segments of Bike Paths Open

Two paths for cyclists and pedestrians that were built on an old railroad right of way have opened for public use along Culver Boulevard.

The 1.4-mile-long paths run parallel from Sawtelle Boulevard to McConnell Avenue, said Niki Tennant, a spokeswoman for Los Angeles City Councilwoman Ruth Galanter, who represents the neighborhood east of Marina del Rey.

The paths connect to Culver City trails on the east and the Ballona Creek bike path on the west.

Built on land owned by the MTA, the $1.5-million project was funded by a combination of state, federal and local funds.

Decades ago, the land was used for a Red Car line, Tennant said. Housing was once proposed for the site, but local residents rallied in support of preserving it as open space.
