Share

A 300-acre prescribed burn will occur today at South Mountain east of Saticoy as a way for county and state firefighters to practice using specialized equipment and to study fire behavior.

The burn will run between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. near Percolation Basin off Los Angeles Avenue, Ventura County Fire Department spokeswoman Sandi Wells said. The exercise will involve engine companies, hand crews and bulldozers.

The purpose of the burn also includes assessing fuel loading, studying wildlife habitat and watershed protection, team building and formulating an incident command system. Other general purposes include fire hazard reduction for the area and improving cattle feeding conditions by reducing brush.
