Armed Assault Prompts Study to Tighten Security
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department proposed metal detectors for the county administrative center to tighten security after an armed assault last month on officials at City Hall, but supervisors balked at the plan.
Before approving the detectors, the supervisors want to know whether the machines will force delays for thousands of employees and visitors. The administrative tower, two blocks from City Hall, has just two entrances to a narrow lobby.
The Sheriff’s Department says it can accommodate orderly passage through the metal detectors if the county staggers employee work schedules.
Five people, including the accused gunman, were wounded in the Oct. 6 shootings at Riverside City Hall. The alleged attacker was a part-time city employee who had been fired.
