* Mary Winchell; Active With Salvation Army

Camarillo resident Mary Allen Winchell died Tuesday after a 10-month battle with brain cancer. She was 78.

Winchell was born April 9, 1920, in Brown County, Ind.

As a young woman, Winchell served in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II. She was a 47-year resident of West Los Angeles and Palm Desert. She volunteered at the Salvation Army and also served as president of its Women’s Auxiliary in the 1970s.

Winchell is survived by her husband of 53 years, Robert Winchell; a son, Robert Allen Winchell of Santa Monica; a daughter, Elizabeth Anne McConnaughey of Camarillo; a brother, Dr. Herman Frank Allen of Black Mountain, N. C., and one granddaughter.

A private service will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to the Salvation Army in Santa Monica or the Livingston Memorial Visiting Nurses Assn. in Ventura.

Arrangements are being handled by Ted Mayr Funeral Home in Ventura.
