Victory Gives Irvine Share of League Title

Irvine fell behind early but shut out Newport Harbor in the second half to win, 34-15, in a Sea View League game Friday night at Irvine High.
The victory gave the Vaqueros (8-1-1, 4-0-1) a share of the league championship.
Trailing, 15-10, at halftime, Irvine got a 25-yard field goal from Dave Ignash, his second of the game, and a one-yard run by Sam Paik to make it 21-15 in the third quarter.
Irvine kept it going in the fourth on a three-yard touchdown run by David Doomey, who led all rushers with 162 yards in 27 carries.
Evan Little capped Irvine’s scoring with a 13-yard touchdown catch from Sean Van de Merghel, who completed nine of 19 passes for 211 yards.
Newport Harbor (6-4, 1-4) led early after a safety and a 55-yard touchdown pass from Steve Gorman to Robert Peredia.
Andre Stewart finished with 82 yards in 15 carries for Newport Harbor.
In another Sea View League game:
Corona del Mar 51, El Toro 28--Grant Estabrook rushed for 158 yards in 23 carries and scored two touchdowns to lead the Sea Kings at Newport Harbor High.
Corona del Mar (6-4, 2-3) took a 21-0 lead on touchdowns runs of 28 and 12 yards by quarterback Dennis Alshuler, and a 23-yard touchdown pass from Alshuler to Mark Hatfield.
The Chargers (2-8, 0-5) cut the lead to seven on touchdown runs of 32 and 23 yards by Mike Marquez, but the Sea Kings moved ahead at the half, 28-14, on Estabrook’s 12-yard touchdown run.
