U.S. Finds Asbestos Violations at School
Inspectors from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency have found several violations of federal rules governing asbestos protections at Sierra Vista Intermediate School.
But EPA officials said the problems do not pose a danger to students and are essentially failures by the school district to follow correct procedures. The school, at 777 E. Puente Ave., was visited after a complaint from a resident, officials said.
Inspectors failed to find evidence, for example, that utility workers were told about materials containing asbestos at the site.
EPA officials issued a noncompliance notice and are requiring the district to correct the problems. In July, Cal/OSHA cited the district for dozens of safety violations at various campuses and facilities.
Supt. Jack Rankin has previously blamed the state citations on a former employee who filed complaints that led to an unusual number of inspections.
