The Pittsburgh Penguins had more shots, more power-play chances and more scoring opportunities than the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday night. The Flyers had more goals, though.

Rod Brind’Amour scored one third-period goal and set up another as the Flyers beat the Penguins, 4-1, for a rare win at Pittsburgh.

The Flyers won for only the second time in their last 20 games at Civic Arena. They are 2-13-5 during that span.

The Flyers rode the goaltending of John Vanbiesbrouck, who broke a personal 0-3-2 streak, and a penalty-killing unit that wiped out seven power plays against the NHL’s No. 1 team with the man advantage.

“It was part good [penalty] killing on their part, part our inability to execute, and a big part was Vanbiesbrouck,” Pittsburgh Coach Kevin Constantine said.

Brind’Amour, who broke a 1-1 tie at 9:30 of the third, assisted on Eric Desjardins’ goal later in the period. Keith Jones and John LeClair also scored for Pittsburgh.

Carolina 5, Montreal 4--Martin Gelinas, Gary Roberts and Ray Sheppard scored goals in a seven-minute span of the second period at Greensboro, N.C., to help the Hurricanes hand the Canadiens their fourth straight loss.

The Hurricanes fell behind, 2-1, after one period, but rallied to keep Montreal in last place in the Northeast Division.

Carolina played most of the game without captain Keith Primeau, who left midway through the first period after taking a shot off his left ankle.

Carolina hung on after Montreal got power-play goals from Vincent Damphousse and Patrice Brisebois in the final 8:38.

Chicago 2, Nashville 1--Tony Amonte scored his league-leading 13th goal and Mark Fitzpatrick made 37 saves at Nashville as the Blackhawks ended a 10-game winless streak.

Alexei Zhamnov scored the other goal for Chicago, which was 0-8-2 coming into the game.

Colorado 5, New York Islanders 2--Valeri Kamensky had a goal and three assists, and Joe Sakic had a goal and an assist at Denver as the Avalanche beat the Islanders for the eighth straight time.
