ROSTER

KEVIN AUGUSTINE (Guard)

With his quickness and 40-inch vertical leap, Augustine possesses the kind of athleticism Coach Henry Bibby wants at point guard. But the sophomore stumbled out of the blocks, missing two weeks of practice for personal reasons. He now must fight his way back into the lineup.

ELIAS AYUSO (Guard)

* No. 20, 6-2, 195, Senior

The Puerto Rican-born Ayuso, nicknamed “El Rifle,” was off-target for much of last season, shooting 37% from the floor. If he can emerge from that slump, the young Trojans will benefit from his scoring and experience.

DAVID BLUTHENTHAL (Forward)

* No. 34, 6-7, 215, Freshman

Bluthenthal is a wide body--by Trojan standards, at least--and one of the forwards Bibby wants to throw at the Mark Madsens and Mike Batistes of the Pac-10. The freshman averaged 20 points a game while leading Westchester High to a state Division I title last season.

SAM CLANCY (Forward)

* No. 50, 6-7, 240, Freshman

Clancy is the jewel of the recruiting class, a highly touted forward from Lakewood, Ohio, who can bang underneath and block shots. He led the team in scoring in two exhibition games.

BRANDON GRANVILLE (Guard)

* No. 5, 5-9, 175, Freshman

The diminutive freshman, another Westchester alumnus, was thrust into action during Augustine’s absence and showed surprising maturity. “He’s a heady point guard,” teammate Jarvis Turner said. “He really pushes the ball up the court.”

GREG LAKEY (Forward)

* No. 44, 6-8, 200, Sophomore

Lakey put on 15 pounds over the summer and returned to campus better suited for the inside play the Trojans need. He should see his minutes increase over last season, when he averaged 5.3 points and 3.7 rebounds.

BRIAN SCALABRINE (Forward-Center)

* No. 24, 6-9, 240, Sophomore

Scalabrine, the closest the Trojans come to a big man, has muscled his way into a prominent role in the lineup. The junior college transfer, who redshirted last season at Highline Community College in Des Moines, Wash., had 11 rebounds in two exhibition games.

ADAM SPANICH (Forward)

* No. 13, 6-7, 212, Senior

His long-distance shot brought down No. 2 Arizona at the end of last season. Spanich is the Trojans’ leading returning scorer with an average of 12 points a game and can carry the team when he gets hot.

SHANNON SWILLIS (Forward)

* No. 22, 6-6, 225, Sophomore

Swillis led the team in rebounds (5.9 per game) and blocked shots (41 for the season) in 1997-98. He is among the returners battling for a starting spot early in the nonconference schedule.

JASON THOMAS (Forward)

* No. 33, 6-4, 220, Freshman

A backup quarterback on the football team, Thomas is tentatively scheduled to join the basketball team in January.

JEFF TREPAGNIER (Guard)

* No. 12, 6-4, 185, Sophomore

Trepagnier has been a pleasant surprise in practice, showing off a new jump shot to go with his shot-blocking. Said Bibby: “Jeff has been our most consistent player in the preseason. He gets so many things done.”

JARVIS TURNER (Forward-Center)

* No. 21, 6-8, 230, Junior

The Trojans dearly need Turner to become the consistent inside player Bibby envisions him to be. He has the moves, but must stay out of foul trouble and remain sound after two injury-racked seasons.

QUINCY WILDER (Guard)

* No. 3, 6-3, 200, Junior

Another Highline Community College transfer, Wilder is athletic enough to play both guard positions and small forward. He averaged 23.1 points and 6.5 rebounds at Highline last season.

A walk-on, Daffeh earned a scholarship in his junior season but did not play.

* No. 52, 6-7, 210, Freshman

Eres joined the Trojans as a walk-on this season.

SHELBY JORDAN (Forward)

* No. 45, 6-7, 200, Sophomore

Jordan, a walk-on, played in two games as a freshman last season, scoring two points and grabbing two rebounds.
