LOS ALAMITOS
A student group called Griffins With a Mission has taught tolerance at Los Alamitos High School since 1993, after an incident in which students’ lockers were stuffed with hate mail. Now, students in the group are being rewarded for their efforts with the California School Boards Assn.’s 1998 Golden Bell Award. The Griffins won in the category of school safety for teaching students how to resolve conflicts without violence. The Griffins organizes and directs retreats, a human relations convention for 25 schools and a conflict mediation program. The association honors winners Dec. 5 in San Diego.
