No. 6 Temple Not Even No. 1 in Philadelphia

Nate Blackwell, Eddie Jones and Mark Macon can quit bragging about Temple’s 16-year winning streak over Penn.

It’s over.

Michael Jordan scored 22 points Monday night as Penn made three three-point shots in overtime and stunned No. 6 Temple, 73-70, at Philadelphia for its first victory over Owl Coach John Chaney.

“We have to work out with these guys all summer,” said Penn’s Matt Langel, who scored 12 points. “We work out with guys like Mark Macon and Eddie Jones and Aaron McKie, and all they say is, ‘We come in here every year and kick your butt.’ Now, we have something to say. We won.”

The Owls (4-1) had a chance to win at the foul line in the closing seconds of regulation. But Lynn Greer made the first to tie the score at 58-58 and missed the second with 3.4 seconds to play.

Penn is 1-1.

No. 4 Kentucky 97, Wright State 75--With three players back from suspensions, the Wildcats (3-0) used their well-stocked bench to overcome a sloppy start and defeat the Raiders (0-4) at Cincinnati.

Heshimu Evans led the Wildcats with 18 points.

No. 5 Maryland 81, Duquesne 47--Terence Morris scored 18 points as the Terrapins (4-0) overpowered the Dukes (3-1) at College Park, Md.

No. 9 Utah 65, Arizona State 48--Andre Miller scored 24 points to lead the Utes (2-1) over the Sun Devils in the first round of the Maui Invitational at Lahaina, Hawaii.

No. 10 North Carolina 86, Hampton 75--Ademola Okulaja had 18 points and eight rebounds and the Tar Heels (4-0) pulled away from the Pirates (0-3) in the second half at Hampton, Va.

No. 13 Xavier 100, Morgan State 67--Lenny Brown scored 23 points as the Musketeers (3-0) rolled over the Bears (1-4) at Cincinnati.

No. 17 Indiana 71, Kansas St. 70--Luke Recker made a three-point shot with 1:03 remaining to give the Hoosiers (5-0) their first lead and followed with three free throws as Indiana held off the Wildcats (3-1) in the opening round of the Maui Invitational.

No. 19 Syracuse 82, Chaminade 44--Freshman guards Tony Bland and Preston Shumpert combined for 26 points to lead the Orangemen (3-0) over the Silverswords (0-1) in the first round of the Maui Invitational.

Michigan 59, No. 22 Clemson 56--Louis Bullock scored 19 of his 24 points in the second half to lead the Wolverines (2-2) over the Tigers (3-1) in the first round of the Maui Invitational.

No. 23 St. John’s 71, Columbia 55--Tyrone Grant scored 13 points to lead five scorers in double figures as he Red Storm (3-0) took time out from the Preseason NIT to defeat the Lions (2-2) at New York.

WOMEN

Julie Lake scored 14 points to help No. 15 Texas Tech (2-1) to a 72-67 victory over Southern Methodist (1-2) at Dallas. . . . Nicole Erickson had 19 points, six assists and seven rebounds to lead No. 20 Duke (2-3) to a 79-71 victory over No. 18 Vanderbilt (2-1) at Nashville, Tenn.
