Leadership Academy Receives $2,500 Grant

* The Ventura County Leadership Academy received a $2,500 grant from BankAmerica Foundation. The money will be used to support the academy’s community Leadership Development Program, which is sponsored by United Way of Ventura County. The program, in its fourth year, is held between September and May. Graduates have gone on to serve in elected and appointed positions in municipal governments, boards of directors for local nonprofit agencies and through participation in community activities.

Recycling Efforts Recognized

* To mark America Recycles Day, the Ventura County Solid Waste Management Department has held an awards presentation at Pictsweet Mushroom Farm in Ventura to honor recycling efforts by the county, cities and businesses.

A County WasteWatch award was given to United Foods Inc. for recycling practices at its Pictsweet Mushroom Farm.

Ventura County and the cities of Ventura, Santa Paula, Moorpark and Thousand Oaks were also recognized for meeting the 25% waste reduction mandate set by the state, and for having made plans to reach 50% waste reduction by the year 2000. Similar recognition was given in early November to Oxnard, Port Hueneme and Simi Valley.
