Tragedy Reflects Disability Decision

Share

* Re “Police Kill Hostage-Taker,” Nov. 24: It is sad that a father who preferred fixing his son’s eyes over helping him adapt to the disability has decided to take extreme measures in an attempt to make his point.

The question is: What did the deaf son want? Braille or a fix? It is clearly his choice.

Apparently the deaf boy wasn’t given the control of his Individual Education Plan. When I was in high school, I was given a good say in what I wanted in my plan.

The decision on what to do about the onset of a disability should be made by the person with the disability or expecting to have it. Who is at fault? Certainly the Orange County Department of Education for allowing other people to take control of the lives of people with disabilities.

It is also sad that many people in Orange County remain bent on trying to keep the control of our lives out of our own reaches.

This event is about who makes the decisions for people with disabilities.
