Oxnard District Changes Transfer Rule

The Oxnard Unified School District has revised its policy on transfers and continuing eligibility, District Athletic Director Tony Diaz said.

Under a revised rule, students who transfer are now ineligible for all levels of athletic participation for one calendar year from the date of their transfer.

Previously, students wishing to transfer from one district high school to another and retain athletic eligibility had to do so within the district’s annual open enrollment period.

Students who change their residence because of a parent or guardian’s residency change will retain their athletic eligibility and may request an intra-district transfer to remain in the original school where residency was established.

Students who transferred with an intra-district permit or through open enrollment before the 1997-98 school year will retain athletic eligibility.

Field set: The seventh annual Ralph Brandt boys’ tournament hosted by Burroughs High in December will include defending City Section champion Reseda and Southern Section Division III semifinalist Servite among its 24 teams.

Burroughs Coach Mike Kodama said the tournament will be played Dec. 3-5 and 11-12 and will include Rio Mesa, Royal, Kennedy, Crespi, Ventura and St. Francis.

Servite defeated Royal, 1-0, in double overtime to win the tournament in 1997.

GOLF

Wright stuff: Chad Wright of Ventura, a Buena High graduate, shot one-under-par 71 and is tied for sixth place after the first round of the Teardrop Tour Ridgemark Classic at Ridgemark Golf Course in Hollister.

Wright is two strokes behind leaders Blair Snell and Frank Apodaca.

Roger Gunn of Agoura, director of instruction at Lindero Country Club, shot three-under-par 69 Wednesday at Moreno Valley Ranch Golf Course to qualify for the Nike Tour Inland Empire Open.

Gunn survived a three-way playoff for two spots to qualify. The Inland Empire Open is Oct. 8-11.
