Long Beach Man Held in Serial Rapes
A 32-year-old Long Beach man suspected of committing a series of rapes and burglaries in the Belmont Shore and Naples area has been arrested, police said Thursday.
Jeffrey Allen Grant, who works for the city of Long Beach as an adult softball coordinator, was arrested Wednesday at work. He was booked at Long Beach City Jail and held in lieu of $1-million bail.
Grant is suspected of attacking seven women in 16 months.
Earlier in the week, a group of Belmont Shore businessmen put up a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the serial rapist.
Long Beach Police Department spokesman Harry Erickson would not disclose how authorities linked the suspect to the rapes but said the arrest did not follow a tip.
“What I can say is a number of things came into play,” Erickson said. “Some of it is forensic evidence that we collected at the crime scenes. We also utilized bloodhounds to track the suspect. That played a part. And there was also some good old-fashioned detective work in following up leads.”
Grant lives about two miles from Belmont Shore, Erickson said.
