Gonzales’ 3 Field Goals Lead Corona del Mar Past Saddleback

Danny Gonzales made three field goals and Dennis Alshuler had a 90-yard interception return to lead Corona del Mar past Saddleback, 16-10, in a nonleague game Thursday at Santa Ana Stadium.

Gonzales hit field goals of 37, 27 and 30 yards.

In the second quarter, Victor Ortiz scored on a seven-yard run for Saddleback (1-3).

Alshuler’s 90-yard return came as time ran out in the first half.

Carlos Rangel’s 38-yard field goal capped Saddleback’s scoring.

Corona del Mar’s Mike Bergey completed 11 of 17 passes for 152 yards. Nate Lemmerman rushed for 108 yards in 27 carries for the Sea Kings (3-1).

In other nonleague games:

Dana Hills 22, Cypress 21--The Dolphins won when Cypress missed a 30-yard field goal at the end of the game.

Jovan Alarcon scored two touchdowns to lead Dana Hills. He scored on a five-yard run in the first quarter and on a 49-yard run in the fourth quarter. The subsequent two-point conversion put Dana Hills ahead to stay.

Josh Zimmerman added a 22-yard touchdown run for the Dolphins (2-2) in the third quarter.

Rancho Alamitos 32, Lakewood Mayfair 21--Lauti Sakaria caught two touchdown passes from George Gonzalez and returned an interception for a touchdown to lead Rancho Alamitos.

Mayfair (2-1) took a 21-20 lead at the half, and after a scoreless third quarter, Gonzalez and Sakaria put the game away.

Gonzalez, threw his third touchdown pass of the game, connecting with Mike Bertelson on a 34-yard touchdown pass to put Rancho Alamitos (2-2) ahead for good, 26-21. Sakaria sealed the victory with a 60-yard interception return.

Savanna 27, Buena Park 12--Jason Brown rushed for 145 yards, returned a kickoff for a touchdown, caught a touchdown pass, kicked a field goal and ran for two extra points to lead Savanna to the victory at Glover Stadium.

After Buena Park (0-4) took a 6-0 lead on a Marquis Colvin’s six-yard run in the first quarter, Brown returned the ensuing kickoff 85 yards and then ran in for two points, giving Savanna (4-0) an 8-6 lead.

Villa Park 24, Loara 13--Steven Choate and John Moshfegh returned interceptions for touchdowns to lead the Spartans at El Modena High.

Loara led, 10-3, when Choate intercepted a pass and returned it 25 yards for the score. Villa Park (2-2) moved ahead, 17-10, in the second quarter when John Henry Jackson threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Dallas Dapper and Dache Dameron ran in the two-point conversion.
