Bonner Throws His Support Behind Brady

Sherdrick Bonner, a former Cal State Northridge quarterback who starts for the Arizona Rattlers of the Arena Football League, attended Northridge’s 44-17 victory over Southern Utah on Saturday.

Bonner was inducted into Northridge’s athletic hall of fame on Friday along with Bob Hiegert, former athletic director, and distance runner Darcy Arreola.

“I’m here having some fun,” Bonner said. “I had some fond memories here. I haven’t been back enough.”

Bonner, who played at Northridge from 1987-90 and ranks fifth in passing with 3,533 yards in his career, last visited the school in 1993.

He was impressed with Northridge quarterback Marcus Brady.

“He’s got all the intangibles,” Bonner said. “For a freshman, he’s got great poise. He’s going to be very successful here.”

The 44-17 victory over Southern Utah was costly for the Matadors.

Nose guard Sean Beard, a transfer from Mt. San Antonio College, broke his right leg and is out four to six weeks.

His replacement, Mike Colunga, strained a tendon in his right ankle but is probable for the Big Sky game against Montana on Saturday.

Marcus Nance, who filled in at the position, strained knee ligaments and is sidelined four to six weeks.

Jacob Mageo, the second-string nose guard who has been nursing an injury, is likely to return against Montana on Saturday.

“That’ll probably be a big topic [today], what we do [at nose guard],” defensive coordinator Craig Wall said.

“I think we’ll be OK.”

Senior Manny Marquez’s extra point streak ended at 36 when he missed early in the third quarter.

Marquez converted five extra points in the game and made a 27-yard field goal.

He leads the Matadors with 34 points.

Left guard Mike Barnes, a transfer from Arizona State, sat out the game against Southern Utah after pulling a groin muscle against Eastern Washington two weeks ago.

“We really want to have him healthy for conference [play],” said Aron Gideon, Northridge line coach.

The Matadors host Montana in a Big Sky Conference game on Saturday.

Freshman Joe Bergman, sidelined the last few weeks because of an ankle injury, started in place of Barnes.
