Chapman Falls to 0-4 With Loss to Azusa

Running back Jack Williams gained 229 yards in 20 carries and Azusa Pacific rallied to beat Chapman for the first time, 26-21, Saturday at Azusa Pacific.

Williams also intercepted a pass in the end zone and made the game-clinching pass deflection on fourth down on the last play of the game to secure the victory in a game in which the lead changed hands seven times.

The Cougars are 1-3 against the Panthers (0-4) since reinstatement of Chapman’s football program.

Azusa Pacific’s Dexter Davis caught his second touchdown pass of the night from quarterback Geoff Buffum from 10 yards with 11 minutes 55 seconds remaining to give Azusa Pacific a 26-21 lead. The Cougar defense then stepped up and stopped a late fourth-quarter drive by Chapman.

After a 21-yard touchdown run by Williams that made it 20-15, Chapman’s Dave Vaccaro caught a nine-yard touchdown pass from Greg Hyland as time expired in the third quarter. The 21-20 lead was Chapman’s last.

Hyland completed 18 of 37 passes for 151 yards.

Nate Ballinger gained 99 yards and one touchdown in 25 carries.

Azusa Pacific improved is 3-2.

In Golden State Athletic Conference men’s soccer:

Fresno Pacific 8, Concordia 2--Edgardo Contreras set Fresno Pacific records for goals and points in a single game with six goals and one assist.

Point Loma Nazarene 5, Southern California College 4 (OT)--Point Loma scored three consecutive goals for the victory, two in the second half and one seven minutes into overtime. Morteza Hirad’s goal was the difference for the Crusaders (9-0-1, 2-0). Point Loma’s Daniel Lemos and Daniel Romero scored in the second half to force overtime.

Joseph Neri led SCC (5-7, 0-2) with two goals and Matthew Palmer and Aaron Frillo each scored once for SCC, which led by two goals at three different times in the game.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, Cal State Fullerton 1--Larissa Carter had a season-high 19 kills and 17 digs in UC Irvine’s 15-12, 15-12, 10-15, 15-6, victory. Megan Sabo had 12 kills for Fullerton (6-8, 1-3).
