Volek Is Key Man for Fresno

Billy Volek passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Fresno State to a 31-21 victory over Brigham Young on Saturday night.

Fresno State (1-3) converted four first-half BYU turnovers into a 24-7 halftime lead.

Volek scored on a three-yard run to give Fresno State the lead early in the first quarter. Justin Johnson’s 20-yard fumble return gave the Bulldogs a 14-0 lead.

Ronney Jenkins put BYU (2-3) on the scoreboard with a nine-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. But Fresno State came back with a 31-yard field goal by Jeff Hanna and a 20-yard scoring pass from Volek to Rodney Wright.

BYU got close in the third quarter on a 58-yard pass from Drew Miller to Carlos Nuno and a 72-yard blocked punt return by Heshi Robertson, cutting the lead to 24-21.

Volek sealed the victory with a 39-yard touchdown pass to Wright midway through the fourth quarter.

BYU fumbled five times in the first half and lost the ball four of those times to the Bulldogs.

Volek passed for 189 yards, completing 14 of 22 attempts.

Jenkins led BYU with 126 yards rushing in 26 carries.
