Ange’s Catch Gives Aztecs a Needed Lift

It was a good call and the big tight end knew it.

San Diego State was bulling downfield, sticking to the ground against Tulsa on Saturday, when the quarterback called for a play-action pass to Jim Ange.

“They expected us to run,” Ange said. “I was wide open.”

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound junior caught the ball for a seven-yard touchdown, sparking the Aztecs to a 24-14 comeback victory.

It was the second touchdown of the season for Ange, who starred at Thousand Oaks High and Moorpark College.

It was San Diego State’s first victory after losses to top-20 teams Wisconsin, USC and Arizona.

“It’s really intense . . . a lot more business-like than junior college or high school,” Ange said. “I’m having a great time.”

It’s Neill: In a showdown between quarterbacks from the region, David Neill led Nevada to a 31-20 victory over Nevada Las Vegas and got the better of his duel with UNLV’s Kevin Crook.

Neill, a former Hart star, threw for 253 yards and two touchdowns and ran for an 18-yard score. The freshman is 2-0 as a starter.

Crook, a Westlake graduate, completed two of 16 passes for 16 yards and an interception.

“It’s all my fault,” he told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I didn’t come to play and, obviously, I didn’t execute.”

SOCCER

Helping out: The UCLA women’s soccer team defeated Hawaii, 4-1, Sunday, in the title game of the Hawaii tournament. Tracey Milburn, a 1997 Moorpark High graduate, scored the first goal for No. 17 UCLA (10-1-1).
