Stevens Shoulders the Load in Highland Victory

Amber Stevens was supposed to be sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Instead, she helped lead Highland High to an 8-15, 14-16, 15-9, 15-6, 15-8, Golden League girls’ volleyball victory over Littlerock on Tuesday night at Highland.

Stevens, who injured her right shoulder last week, did not play in the first game and was inserted into the match after Coach Mike Bird received permission from Stevens’ mother, who arrived before the second game.

Stevens finished with 10 kills, 17 digs and six aces, five of which came in the fourth game.

“She did the total Kirk Gibson,” Bird said.

Melissa Rawson had 12 kills and 10 digs for Highland (5-2, 1-0 in league play).

In other volleyball matches:

Harvard-Westlake def. Louisville, 15-3, 15-5, 15-13--Joanna August had 11 kills and eight aces for the Wolverines, ranked No. 1 region by The Times, in a Mission League victory at Louisville.

Anne Jakle added seven kills for Harvard-Westlake (5-1, 1-0) and Leslie Meller had 37 assists in her third match in place of Ashley Julian, who is out with a fractured wrist.

Royal def. Thousand Oaks 16-14, 12-15, 15-9, 15-10--Courtney Guerra had 17 kills for the Highlanders in a Marmonte League victory at Thousand Oaks.

Royal (15-3, 5-0), ranked No. 2 in the region, had 21 aces, including five by Toni-Ann Merendino.

Jen Corral had 13 kills and three aces for Thousand Oaks and Michelle Spencer added 10 kills and three aces.

The Lancers (8-4, 2-2) had 12 aces.

Westlake def. Simi Valley, 15-3, 15-4, 15-8--Tawny Thorp set a school record with a .923 hitting percentage for the Warriors (8-2, 3-1), ranked No. 6 in the region, in a Marmonte League victory at Simi Valley.

Thorp had 12 kills in 13 attempts for the Warriors.

Calabasas def. Santa Paula, 15-3, 15-6, 15-6--Brooke Niles, who has committed to UC Santa Barbara, had 15 kills in 27 attempts for Calabasas (8-2, 3-1), ranked No. 3 in the region.

Niles finished with a .555 hitting percentage.

La Reina def. Fillmore, 15-0, 15-9, 15-2--Stephanie Hyatt had nine aces and 16 service points for the Regents in a Tri-Valley League victory at La Reina.

Jennifer Ryan added 10 kills in two games for the five-time defending league champion Regents (9-0), ranked No. 5 in the region.

Notre Dame def. Chaminade, 15-10, 15-10, 15-9--Sarah Braga had nine kills for the Knights (7-1, 3-0), ranked No. 9 in the region, in a Mission League victory at Chaminade.

Abby Hedgepeth did not play for Chaminade (5-3, 0-1) because of bronchitis.

Flintridge Sacred Heart def. Alemany, 15-11, 15-2, 15-5--Megan Hosp had 16 kills, 13 digs and three aces, and the Tologs, ranked No. 4 in the region, shut down the Indians (4-3) over the final two games in a Mission League opener at Alemany.

Brynne Young had 13 kills and Gloria Borges added 43 assists for Sacred Heart (5-1).

Taft def. Chatsworth, 9-15, 15-8, 6-15, 15-7, 15-12--Trisha Bratford had 15 kills, 11 blocks and five aces for the Toreadors (3-0, 1-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference victory at Taft.

Saugus def. Burbank, 15-9, 15-5, 15-6--Jamie Bolt had 16 service points and 34 assists, and Heather Cessna added 11 kills for the Centurions (2-3, 1-0) in a Foothill League victory at Burbank.

Granada Hills def. El Camino Real, 14-16, 15-8, 15-13, 15-7--Michelle Ferrucci had eight of her 23 kills in the fourth game for the host Highlanders (3-1, 1-0) in a Northwest Valley Conference match.

Oxnard def. Hueneme, 15-3, 15-4, 15-6--Jennifer Otani had eight kills and Monique Haun added seven aces for Oxnard (5-1, 5-0) in a Pacific View League victory at Oxnard.

GIRLS’ GOLF

La Reina 146, Nordhoff 152, San Marcos 161--Beth Allen of Nordhoff shot an even-par 37, but La Reina won the Tri-Valley League match at Santa Barbara Golf Course.

Tralee O’Hanlon shot 46 for La Reina (12-0, 6-0).

Louisville 136, Chaminade 147, Alemany 159--Katie McLean shot a nine-over-par 40 for Chaminade and was the medalist in a Mission League match at El Cariso Golf Course.

Stephanie Tyson shot 42 for Louisville.
