Ventura Rolls On Behind Sanford

Two goals from Chrissy Sanford enabled Ventura College to defeat Moorpark, 2-1, in a Western State Conference women’s soccer game Tuesday at Ventura College.

Sanford, a freshman from Newbury Park High, opened the scoring in the 18th minute off Barbara Almaraz’s seventh assist. In the 57th minute, Sanford struck again with an unassisted goal.

Ventura, which has lost only one conference game in the program’s three-year history, extended its conference unbeaten streak to 29 games and put itself in position to claim its third consecutive conference title. In three years, the Pirates are 34-1-2 in WSC play and 52-6-5 overall.

Michelle Pentreath scored for Moorpark (8-3-3, 5-1-2) with 10 minutes remaining off an assist from Tiffany Tackett. Raider goalkeeper Julie Jensen made seven saves.

In other women’s soccer games:

Pepperdine 1, CS Northridge 0--Amy Johnson headed Claire Wels’ corner kick to Kate Desmond, who scored on a short-range header of her own in the 82nd minute to give the Waves (5-5-2) a nonconference victory at Northridge.

Desmond’s winning shot was the only blemish for Northridge goalkeeper Jenny Willemse, who stopped seven shots. Pepperdine’s Cheri Phillips made five saves.

Northridge (3-9) held a 19-15 edge in shots.

The Matadors have lost 19 of their last 23 games over two seasons.

Canyons 5, Oxnard 2--Cassie Hencey scored three goals and Cristie Burnette added two for Canyons (7-7-2, 3-4-1), which overcame a 1-0 halftime deficit in a Western State Conference game at Oxnard.

Norma Gutierrez scored both goals for the Condors.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal Lutheran def. Occidental, 15-1, 15-4, 15-5--Lauren McCartin, a former outside hitter at Saugus High, had 11 kills for the Regals in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victoryat Cal Lutheran.

Cal Lutheran (8-1, 3-0) has won eight consecutive matches since losing the season opener in five games to Cal State Dominguez Hills.

The Master’s def. La Verne, 15-7, 15-13, 15-3--Kim Gibson had 10 kills and six blocks, and Stacey Hudson and Beth Barrington each added nine kills for the Mustangs (11-8) in a nonconference victory at Master’s.
