Key to season: The Kings got the best seasons of their careers from several players and are still a young team. They will need to continue to improve to make any noise in the playoffs, and maturity must be shown in avoiding the kinds of silly penalties that generate excessive penalty-killing responsibilities, at which they slipped from 87.2% to 84.2% (19th in the league) last season. Conversely, the power play must improve from 14.2% (15th in the league). They were eighth in the NHL in scoring last season, but a take-charge scorer would help and one is being sought.

Outlook: The addition of Steve Duchesne to be the trigger man on the power play should improve that aspect immensely, and also could help Rob Blake to his second successive Norris Trophy. Duchesne also should help the other defensemen score. The Kings had 42 goals by defensemen last season, 32 of them by Blake and Garry Galley. Up front, Luc Robitaille is back after missing much of last season because of a stomach injury, and 25-30 goals by him (he had 16 in 57 games last season) should make the offense more potent. Center Jozef Stumpel is the steadiest of the King forwards, and his line had 68 goals last season. A playoff team is a strong possibility, but can the Kings win one or two series?.
