Montana State Steals Past Weber State

Noel Kulbeck intercepted a pass 54 seconds into the game and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown to start Montana State toward a 10-7 victory over previously undefeated Weber State on Saturday in a Big Sky Conference game at Ogden, Utah.

Weber State (5-1, 3-1 in conference play) had a chance to force overtime on a 31-yard field goal by Scott Shields with four seconds left. The snap was bad and holder John Fassel threw a pass to Santos Carrillo, who was tackled on the six-yard line as time expired.

Montana State (4-1, 2-0), which had three interceptions, built the lead to 10-0 on a 24-yard field goal by Carson Souter with 8:34 left in the third quarter.

Weber State scored on Chris Wallace’s 11-yard pass to Tomahawk Maddox with 1:24 to play in the third.

Morgan Welch of Weber State, who leads NCAA Division I-AA in rushing, had 211 yards in 39 carries.

Northern Arizona 30, Idaho State 7--Travis Brown returned after missing three games because of a dislocated elbow and helped the Lumberjacks win a Big Sky game at Flagstaff, Ariz.

Brown completed his first eight passes, including a 24-yard touchdown to Justin Yuille that gave Northern Arizona (4-2, 1-2) a 16-0 lead nine minutes before halftime.

Tavon Cooper had touchdown runs of one and 35 yards for the Lumberjacks, who ended a five-game conference losing streak.

Kevin McCarthy completed 12 of 26 passes for 167 yards and a touchdown for Idaho State (1-4, 1-2).

Brown completed 10 of 15 pass for 95 yards and did not throw an interception.

Portland State 58, Sacramento State 31--Jimmy Blanchard passed for 323 yards and four touchdowns, three to Art Williams, for the Vikings in a Big Sky game at Portland.

Blanchard completed 21 of 28 passes without an interception and Portland (2-3, 2-2) had its biggest scoring output in a game since joining the Big Sky in 1996, and its most points since defeating St. Francis (Pa.), 52-28, in 1991.

The Vikings rolled up 714 yards, including 390 yards passing, with reserve quarterbacks Tyson Parsons and Wade Sparks adding to the total the last 11 minutes.

Charles Dunn of Portland State rushed for 247 yards in 31 carries and a touchdown.

Blanchard completed 11 of 15 for 191 yards and a 31-yard touchdown pass play to Williams in helping the Vikings build a 27-10 halftime lead.

Williams caught touchdown passes from Blanchard on plays of 43 and 16 yards in the second half.

Charles Roberts of Sacramento State (2-4, 0-3) rushed for 185 yards in 25 carries, including a 67-yard touchdown run and two two-yard scores.

Eastern Washington 42, Western Washington 19--Bashir Levingston scored on an 83-yard punt return and a 66-yard pass play to help the Eagles win the first game between these intrastate rivals since 1978 at Cheney, Wash.

Jovan Griffith rushed for 149 yards and a touchdown in 15 carries and Mike Mackenzie had 115 yards and two touchdowns in 13 carries for Eastern Washington (2-3, 1-2).

Western Washington is 3-2.
