Catholic Football Leagues Approved
The Catholic Athletic Assn. on Monday approved a football releaguing proposal that will bring together Notre Dame, Crespi, Chaminade, Harvard-Westlake and St. Francis in a revamped Del Rey League in 1999.
Alemany would be part of a Mission League that includes Bishop Montgomery, St. Bernard, St. Paul and Serra. A new “super Division I” Angelus League would be made up of Mater Dei, Santa Margarita, Servite, Loyola, St. John Bosco and Bishop Amat.
The CAA also approved a Mission League made up of Loyola, Notre Dame, Crespi, St. Francis, Alemany, Harvard-Westlake and Chaminade for all sports except football.
The 46 schools in the CAA have until Friday to appeal. A final CAA vote would be taken Oct. 21 if any school appeals. The new alignments would be for three years, beginning in the fall of 1999.
Bad break: An MRI taken over the weekend revealed that Westlake receiver Travis Campbell still has a slight separation in his right shoulder and probably will not play Thursday against Newbury Park.
Last word: Michael Brignac, a junior wide receiver at Westlake, has lost his final appeal to regain his varsity eligibility this season. The CIF upheld a decision by the Southern Section to deny Brignac eligibility because of “undue influence.”
VOLLEYBALL
The commitments: Village Christian High middle blocker Errin Benesh has committed to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Christine Lambert, a 6-foot-2 middle blocker at Paraclete, has committed to Connecticut.
