Frerotte Regains Redskin Starting Job

Gus Frerotte has been reinstated as the starting quarterback for the winless Washington Redskins, who play the unbeaten Minnesota Vikings on Sunday in Minneapolis.

Frerotte was demoted by Coach Norv Turner after throwing two second-half interceptions that led to a season-opening loss to the New York Giants. He was replaced by Trent Green, who struggled in a 17-12 loss to the previously winless Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday.

Turner said he stayed with Green for five games because a mobile quarterback was needed behind a line that has given up 28 sacks. Turner now says he hopes Frerotte’s quick release can take some pressure off the line.

Quarterback Jason Garrett will make one more start in place of injured Troy Aikman when the Dallas Cowboys play the Bears at Chicago. The Cowboys (4-2) have won three of four games since Garrett took over for Aikman, who suffered a broken collarbone in Week 2. Aikman will return in a Monday night game on Nov. 2 at Philadelphia. That game follows an open date for the Cowboys. . . . Injuries have turned Bill Schroeder into the Green Bay Packers’ third receiver and their No. 3 quarterback. Schroeder moved up after wide receiver Derrick Mayes and backup quarterback Doug Pederson were injured in Oct. 5 loss to Minnesota. Mayes is sidelined six to eight weeks because of ligament damage in his right knee and Pederson will miss six weeks because of a broken jaw that he suffered on a hit by Viking cornerback Corey Fuller, who was fined $20,000 for the crown-to-chin blow. Because Pederson was also the holder for kicker Ryan Longwell, safety Mike Prior and new No. 2 quarterback Rick Mirer are being tried as holders in practice. Schroeder, a third-year player who has primarily been a kick returner, hasn’t played quarterback since high school. . . . New York Giant safety Sam Garnes was scheduled to have surgery on his right foot today and is expected to be sidelined five weeks. . . . St. Louis Ram tight end Ernie Conwell, knocked unconscious after being hit by safety Kevin Williams in 30-10 victory over the New York Jets on Sunday, is expected to practice Thursday. . . . Carolina lost offensive tackle Blake Brockermeyer and defensive back Derwin Gray four to six weeks because of sprained knee ligaments. Still uncertain is the status of Kerry Collins, who last week said he no longer had the will to be the Pathers’ quarterback and was not with the team for its 27-20 loss at Dallas. Steve Beuerlein replaced Collins and threw for three touchdowns. The NFL trading deadline is today.
