City to Slow Speeding Vehicles With Traffic Circle

Share

The city will build a traffic circle at Central Avenue and 4th Street, an intersection residents say is dangerous because speeding cars and trucks use it as a shortcut to Long Beach.

The City Council authorized the $50,000 project Monday after staff said the intersection did not meet the requirements for a stop sign or traffic light.

In addition to the traffic circle, the project also will include closing a one-way feeder street to Central Avenue between Marina Drive and 2nd Street, and restricting Central’s weight limit to three tons, thus excluding heavy trucks.

“They’re revving to go up that hill and, by the time they get by my house, they’re just screaming,” said Imogene Parko, a Central Avenue resident.

The circle is a “traffic calming” measure designed to slow cars.

Public Works Director Steve Badum said if the bidding process goes well, the project could be completed by summer.
