County Offers Voting Materials in Korean
Korean-language voting materials for the Nov. 3 election were unveiled Thursday in an effort to spur greater Korean American voter participation.
The county Board of Supervisors voted unanimously a month ago to offer the bilingual sample ballots.
State law requires the booklets, which provide information on all candidates and measures on the ballot, to be available in English, Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Tagalog and Vietnamese.
The board decided to add Korean because of the rapidly increasing number of Korean Americans of voting age in the county, Supervisor Yvonne Brathwaite Burke said at a news conference Thursday that included members of the Korean American Coalition. “I hope what we’re doing here will spread,” Burke said.
Voting materials have been available in Korean for Los Angeles city elections for five years but not at the county and state level.
Interested voters can have the materials mailed to them by calling (800) 815-2666. The materials will also be available at polling sites on election day.
