St. Paul Is Too Much for St. John Bosco, 57-0

If revenge wasn’t enough incentive, St. Paul was trying to extend a four-game shutout streak when it took the field Friday at St. John Bosco.

The streak is alive as the Swordsmen won, 57-0. The victory avenged a loss last season that sent the Braves to the playoffs.

Last week against Alta Loma, St. Paul (6-0) relied on its running game, amassing 216 yards on the ground. Against Bosco (3-3), it was quarterback Jon Montes’ passing that did the damage.

“[Bosco was] ready for our power,” Montes said. “We pass when needed and tonight I was ready.”

Montes was 15 of 19 for 218 yards and three touchdowns. Receiver Marcell Allmond caught two of the touchdowns, finishing with four catches for 72 yards.

St. Paul Coach Marijon Ancich said the plan was to use the run to set up the pass.

“We wanted to run play action,” he said. “[Bosco] wanted to stop the run and that made a big difference. The linebackers stacked up and went right at [the run].”

That isn’t to say the running game didn’t contribute for St. Paul.

Fullback Manuel Murillo, who ran for 144 yards against Alta Loma, had 120 yards in 17 carries, including a 42-yard score on St. Paul’s first play of the second half.

But once again, the story of the game was the Swordsmen defense.

The Braves had only 51 yards at halftime, and committed five turnovers in the game. The St. Paul defense added scoring of its own.

Cornerback Abraham Cruz intercepted an Alex Aguilar pass and returned it 55 yards to make the score 27-0.
