Granada Hills Drops Taft Into Second Place

Michelle Ferrucci had 19 kills and seven blocks for Granada Hills High in a 15-10, 16-14, 12-15, 15-11 Northwest Valley Conference girls’ volleyball victory over Taft on Tuesday at Granada Hills.

The Highlanders (5-2, 3-1 in conference play) moved a game ahead of Taft (4-3, 2-2).

In other volleyball matches:

Cleveland def. Kennedy, 5-15, 15-11, 15-7, 15-1--Kristy Schultz had 18 kills for the Cavaliers (3-2, 1-2), who won a Northwest Valley Conference match at Kennedy.

Highland def. Palmdale, 15-4, 15-6, 15-3--Amber Stevens had 11 kills for the Bulldogs (9-2, 5-0), who won their 23rd consecutive Golden League match.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Notre Dame 15, Crespi 45; Notre Dame 15, Chaminade 44--The Knights clinched a share of their first Mission League title since 1977 in a double-dual meet at Griffith Park.

Senior Kevin Lelles finished the course in 16:21 to lead a sweep.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Louisville 20, Notre Dame 43; Louisville 18, Chaminade no score--Senior Kim Utterson of Louisville finished second and junior Rosemary Muller placed third to help the Royals take five of the top seven places in the Mission league double-dual meet at Griffith Park.

Utterson clocked 19:58 over the three-mile course with Muller at 20:05 for Louisville.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Granada Hills 5, San Fernando 2--Jasmin Dao, Kelley Takeshita, Caryn Linder and Michal Zeituni claimed singles victories and the Highlanders (8-0, 4-0) won a battle of unbeaten teams in a Northwest Valley Conference match at Granada Hills.

Elizabeth Cardenas and Claudia Perez of San Fernando (7-1, 3-1) defeated Valerie Ramirez and Shannon Slotnick, 8-6, handing Granada Hills’ No. 1 doubles team its first loss.

Monroe 6, Sylmar 1--Jessica Barrett won the last four games to defeat Natalie Chavez, 8-7 (13-11), at No. 1 singles for the Vikings (4-4, 4-1) in a Mid-Valley League victory at Monroe.

Calabasas 18, Malibu 0--Shervin Saedinia, at No. 1 singles, and the doubles team of Andrea Leewong and Vanessa Every each won all 18 games for the Coyotes (12-0, 2-0) in a Frontier League match at Malibu.

Simi Valley 18, Moorpark 0--Lindsay Fredrickson did not lose a game in three singles sets for the Pioneers in a Marmonte League match at Simi Valley.

Rebecca Hunau and Stella Chu remained undefeated at No. 1 doubles for the Pioneers (12-2, 6-1).

Hart 10, Burbank 6--The Indians won seven of nine doubles matches and took a two-game lead by beating the Bulldogs (10-2, 5-2) for the second time this season in a Foothill League match at Hart.

Penny Letts and Catherine Pucci (19-0) swept three sets for the Indians (10-2, 7-0), who have won 17 consecutive league matches.

Notre Dame 10, Flintridge Sacred Heart 8--The Knights won eight of nine doubles sets in a Mission League victory at Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Park.

H Fehn and Dawn McGaffee swept their doubles matches for Notre Dame (5-8, 4-5), as did Laura Chaimowitz and Natalie Malouf.

La Reina 13, Oak Park 5--The Regents (10-1, 6-0) swept nine singles sets behind Lauren Dickey, Samantha Hammond and Jessica Blau in a Tri-Valley League match at Oak Park.

Camarillo 13, Rio Mesa 5--The Scorpions won seven of nine doubles matches in a nonleague victory at Rio Mesa.

Annie Doud and Jenny Underwood lost only three games while sweeping three sets for Rio Mesa (9-4).

Tiffany Brymer, playing at No. 1 singles, lost only one game in three sets for the Spartans (7-8).

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Ventura 19, San Marcos 9--Chad Caldwell scored six goals for the Cougars (20-0, 4-0) in a Channel League victory at Ventura.
