Corona del Mar Defeats Sailors in Girls’ Tennis

The Corona del Mar girls’ tennis team defeated Newport Harbor for the second time this season, again winning 10-8 in a Sea View League match Tuesday at Newport Harbor.

Senior Eva Baudenbacher won, 7-6, 6-0, 6-3, in singles to lead Corona del Mar (9-2, 5-1), ranked second in Southern Section Division I. Newport Harbor (8-6, 3-3) is ranked fifth.

In Century League girls’ tennis:

Villa Park 9, Canyon 9 (Villa Park wins in games, 73-70)--Ann Kleinhenz beat Canyon’s No. 2 singles player, Nicole Sadler, 6-1, to tie the score, 9-9, and lift Villa Park in games. Sisters Jasmine and Tiffany Chung teamed for 6-3, 6-1, 6-2 doubles victories to remain undefeated in league. Villa Park is 7-5, 6-0.

In the Empire League:

Loara 12, Kennedy 9--Heather Hodge swept in singles, 7-5, 7-6, and with Gee Baik won 6-4 in doubles for host Loara (4-3 in league).

In the Garden Grove League:

Bolsa Grande 11, La Quinta 7--Cheryl Lacson and Anh-Tu Ha won, 6-3, 6-2, 6-3, to lead visiting Bolsa Grande (4-4 in league).

In the Sea View League:

Santa Margarita 12, El Toro 6--Erin Miller, Tatiana Steinberg and Laura Bonhall swept in singles for Santa Margarita (8-5, 3-3).

In the Sunset League:

Los Alamitos 11, Esperanza 7--Emily Ackerman and Tara Siddiqui swept in doubles, 6-3, 6-0, 6-3, for Los Alamitos (6-6, 5-0). Kelly Six swept in singles, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0, for Esperanza (11-4, 4-2).

Edison 9, Marina 9 (Edison wins in games, 81-72)--Marina’s Leanne Lambert was the only player to sweep. She won 6-4, 6-2, 6-1. Edison led, 4-2, after the first round, and Marina came back to tie the score, 6-6, going into the third round.

Huntington Beach 11, Fountain Valley 7--Kali Hanley and Ellen Huang won in doubles, 6-1, 6-0, 6-2, to lead visiting Huntington Beach (2-4 in league). Sara Mazza and Jenny Quilico won, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2, for the Oilers.

In Sunset League field hockey:

Edison 1, Newport Harbor 0--Junior Carolyn Corbett scored the winning goal for visiting Edison (10-0-1) in the final 32 seconds of the game. Newport Harbor is 6-1-4.

In Empire League girls’ golf:

El Dorado 119, Western 120--Sarah Yarbrough had four pars and shot nine-over 38 to lead El Dorado (7-3) at Birch Hills. Kristie Park made par on the final hole en route to a seven-over 36 for Western (6-4 in league).

In the South Coast League:

Mission Viejo 132, Trabuco Hills 135--Medalist Monica Dalton shot six-over 37 to help Mission Viejo (6-9, 4-3) at Casta del Sol. Susan Ahn shot 41 for Trabuco Hills.

In the Sunset League:

Edison 105, Huntington Beach 123--Lauren Brown made eagle on the 200-yard, par-four sixth hole at David L. Baker, and finished with a one-over 32 for Edison (7-2, 4-1).

Marina 131, Los Alamitos 161--Medalist Courtney Goebel shot three-over 39 to lead Marina (11-1, 5-0) at Old Ranch. Los Alamitos is 6-6, 2-3.

In Empire League boys’ water polo:

Cypress 9, Loara 7--Josh Antunez scored one of his five goals with 3 minutes 1 second left in the game to give Cypress a 9-5 lead. Jason Nitta scored two goals for Cypress (8-6, 3-0). David Wright scored five goals to lead Loara.

In the Garden Grove League:

Garden Grove 10, Pacifica 4--Tommy Lane scored three of his five goals in the fourth quarter, when Garden Grove (9-6, 3-0) outscored Pacifica 5-2. Pacifica is 1-1 in league.

In the Golden West League:

No. 4 Servite 21, Tustin 8--Michael Kim scored six goals to lead host Servite (13-3, 3-0). Tustin (7-11, 2-1) was led by Jeff Sample with four goals.

In the Pacific Coast League:

No. 10 University 17, Costa Mesa 10--Ted Peck scored a game-high five goals for University (14-3, 2-0), ranked third in Division II.

Matt Tipton scored four goals for visiting 10th-ranked Costa Mesa.

In nonleague water polo:

Mission Viejo 18, Aliso Niguel 12--Mission Viejo’s Carl Ulrich scored five goals for the second consecutive game. Ulrich had five goals in an overtime loss to Villa Park on Monday.
