No. 1 Woodbridge Beats Newport Harbor

Woodbridge, the top-ranked girls’ tennis team in Orange County, needed a late victory in doubles to edge fifth-ranked Newport Harbor, 10-8, in a Sea View League match Thursday at Woodbridge High.

April Artunian and Natalie Mitton won their last set, 6-1, to seal it for Woodbridge (15-0, 7-0 in league). Before that set, the score was tied in games, 71-71. Woodbridge’s Susanna Lingman swept in singles, 6-4, 6-4, 6-0.

Newport Harbor is 9-7, 3-4.

In another Sea View match:

Irvine 9, El Toro 9 (Irvine wins on games, 84-70)--Barbara Ngo won in singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-0, for host Irvine (4-11, 1-6). El Toro is 8-9, 1-6.

In the Century League:

Canyon 10, Orange 8--Sophomore Heather Hohenstein improved to 21-0 in league, winning 6-1, 6-1, 6-1 in singles for visiting Canyon (6-10, 5-2).

In the Olympic League:

Calvary Chapel 9, St. Margaret’s 9 (Calvary Chapel wins on games, 86-84)--Amy Leece beat St. Margaret’s No. 1 singles player, Dana Malas, 7-5, to tie the score, 9-9, and lift Calvary Chapel (8-6, 6-3).

In the Orange League:

Valencia 11, Savanna 10--Brenda De La Cruz defeated Angeli Nucup in the final singles set, 6-4, to give Valencia (10-7, 7-1) the victory. Savanna is 4-12, 1-7.

In Golden West League boys’ cross-country:

Santa Ana 15, Westminster 50--Alfonso Leon led Santa Ana to its second consecutive league title winning the three-mile race in 15 minutes 40 seconds at Irvine Park.

In Golden West League girls’ cross-country:

Santa Ana 15, Westminster 50--Noemi Fuentes won the race in 19:46 over three miles at Irvine Park to help Santa Ana win its second consecutive league title.

In the Orange League:

Brea Olinda 15, Savanna 50--Brea Olinda (5-1, 4-0), which hasn’t lost in league since 1992, won its 64th consecutive league dual meet. Brea’s Michelle DiMeo finished the three miles in a course-record 18:58 at Savanna High. DiMeo broke former Brea standout Christy Burdett’s 1996 record by two seconds.

In the Sunset League:

Esperanza wins twice--Pam Smith won the three-mile race in 17:59 at Yorba Regional Park for Esperanza (5-0), the top-ranked team in the county. The Aztecs beat Los Alamitos, 15-44, and Huntington Beach, 15-47. Los Alamitos (3-2 in league) defeated Huntington Beach, 23-37.

In Sunset League field hockey:

Edison 3, La Verne Bonita 0--Emily Nehrig, Nicolette Harnish and Ann Wiles scored goals for visiting Edison (11-0-1).

Marina 1, Fountain Valley 1--Jenny Black scored the tying goal with two seconds remaining for Fountain Valley (5-0-7). Garrity Harris scored a first-half goal for Marina (6-2-4).

In Pacific Coast League girls’ golf:

University 127, Laguna Hills 146--Angela Won shot a two-over 38 for University (14-0, 5-0) at Rancho San Joaquin.

In the Sea View League:

Woodbridge 124, El Toro 143--Channing Lovejoy shot a one-over 37 at Strawberry Farms for host Woodbridge.

In the South Coast League:

Mater Dei 114, Mission Viejo 131--Heather McDermott had two birdies and shot two-over 33 for Mater Dei (9-1, 6-1) at Casta del Sol.

Marina 131, Edison 135--Courtney Goebel shot two-over 38 for Marina (12-1, 6-0) at Meadowlark.

In South Coast League boys’ water polo:

Capistrano Valley 17, Dana Hills 13--Ryan Keating scored nine goals and Jeff De Leon added four for visiting Capistrano Valley (9-9, 3-0). David Kardos scored eight goals for Dana Hills (1-2 in league).
