Fullerton Beats La Habra, 28-7, With Late Flurry
Fullerton rallied for four fourth-quarter touchdowns--three in the final two minutes--to defeat La Habra, 28-7, in a Freeway League game Friday at La Habra High.
After the Indians tied the score, 7-7, on a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jonathan Pate to Andy Zarate with 9 minutes 22 seconds left, Pate gave Fullerton the lead with a three-yard run with 1:54 remaining.
On La Habra’s next possession, Zarate intercepted Ryan Hall’s pass and returned it to the three-yard line. Fullerton running back Armando Lopez, who rushed for 112 yards in 22 carries, scored from there.
The Indians (3-4, 2-0) scored again with nine seconds remaining when Brian Mitchell intercepted Hall’s pass and returned it 45-yards for a touchdown.
La Habra running back Josh Herrera, who rushed for 387 yards last week, hyper-extended his right elbow on the Highlanders’ second play from scrimmage and did not return. His replacement, sophomore Brent West, rushed for 42 yards in 14 carries.
La Habra (2-5, 1-1) took a 7-0 first-quarter lead on Hall’s fourth-down, one-yard run after a 42-yard interception return by Josh White.
