Share

A new, state-of-the-art technology lab and professional development center is open for free use by area residents every Wednesday from 6 to 9 p.m.

Operated by the county Office of Education in space provided by the Phoenix Academy, the North Area Complex Education Center will offer free use of computers, printers, copiers and scanners.

Free computer and Internet training and a 40-seat meeting and professional training facility also will be available to the public. Area residents can take free computer training sessions to be offered on Wednesday evenings.

The services were created through a collaboration between the county Office of Education and Phoenix Academy, a 150-bed drug treatment center for teens.

The land use permit for the Phoenix House required it to set aside a portion of its office space for community use, said Phoenix House spokeswoman Sue Cornick.

Although providing space for the Office of Education was considered community or public use, Cornick said the Phoenix House wanted to offer the community something more.

“This is something that the real public can use, not just public employees,” she said.

The center is at 11610 Eldridge Ave. For more information, call the center at (818) 896-5530.
